Blood in the Poo

Recommended Posts

HI all,

I've got 2 new birds who have been introduced to my existing 2 birds. I did a softly, softly introduction, but there is a little bit of chasing still, rather than pecking.

The new birds are 20 weeks old now.

I'm a little concerned, as one of the new birds seems to have a small amount of blood in her poo. I mainly notice it first thing in the morning, when clearing the droppings tray, but I don't think it's down to anything she is eating, as the others don't seem to have the same problem. The other new bird has solid poo. The birds are kept in the run most of the time, and I monitor what they peck at when I let them out daily.

I did think internal parasite, but I believe that they have been Verm-X'd while at the farm where I got them. They are due for a dose in a weeks time.

The bird in question seems healthy enough, and is eating, but she is at the bottom of the pecking order and has always been a little nervous as a result. Every day she gains a little more confidence.

I'm not immediately alarmed, but I would appreciate any thoughts if anyone has an idea of what it may be down to.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

David

Welcome aboard. :D

Many forum members have found Verm-X not to be effective, so I would re-worm them with Flubenvet. There is no egg withdrawal period with Flubenvet.

If they are free ranging, eating garden worms can give the appearance of blood in the poo. as can the occasional sloughing off of the bowel wall.

Eating beetroot can also do it. :D

Thanks for the swift response.

Clara (the bird concerned!) does not get to eat beetroot, or wild berries when she free ranges. She is still quite timid so it's just the odd worm that she might find and grass/weeds.

I'm well versed with the colour of normal poo, from my older two birds, and it doesn't look like she's had too many worms to eat, especially as the other new bird seems quite normal, so with all of this taken into account, it does sound like an internal parasite issue. I've noticed it for a few days now, so I shall take your advice on the worm treament.

Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks again,

David

Youngsters often shed a little gut lining every now and again which looks like strands of blood in their poo, so it could be a simple as that. The first time I saw it I panicked and got a sample straight down to the vets. Oh well, at least I found out they were clear of worms and coccidiosis!

Herban is a good supplement for "poo problems", you just add a tiny amount to their drinking water. It's oregano based and available online.
