Guest Posted October 8, 2009 Share Posted October 8, 2009 Hi I am looking at booking a holiday villa in EU and they want bankers draft payment(I would rather send them a cheque..old fashioned I am) but with First Direct and havent got time to phone them as they always try to sell you other services(but I think they are great)I looked on the web page and so many lists of charges got confused! Any clues as to costs etc or what one is(I did a transfer once for buying land and organised it but it was for lots of money), its only for a couple hundred pounds thanks any insight much appreciated indie ps not sure if this is the best way to send money...I am so old fashioned ! Geoid Posted October 8, 2009 Share Posted October 8, 2009 A bankers draft is almost the same as a cheque, but instead of the the funds leaving your account, the funds have to be transferred into the banks account. This makes sure it doesnt bounce and the person doesnt have to wait for the funds to be cleared. I think it costs £10 to get a bankers draft, or it might be free. I know a few years ago Nationwide charged me £17 to transfer money and I had to go and see them..it was not an easy process and they messed it up. I didnt want to book a holiday to find out it was going to cost £££££ Fortunately it was to a UK account, some of the accounts I had been looking at were ie payment in the currency of that country and that got me more confused. I can't remember what it cost but it wasn't a small amount, I seem to remember . I would expect it to have gone up since then, but £25 sounds about right when you think how much they charge for everything else! It was £17 for a telegraphic transfer of funds abroad.
