Daphne
Dear Tricia - I really do feel for you. Firstly Philip - take him back to the vet. I don't know whats wrong with him, but if the vet says its something which ABs can help with then do do as Sandy suggests in another post and ask if he can have something syringed into him or an injection. The latter gets to work fastest. If needs be, get some wet food into him - eg pellet slop, weetabix, grapes anything he likes basically. Most importantly get some water into him. If you don't have a syringe then finger feed/offer water in shallow bowl to his beak, but I'd definitely get a couple asap for your medical box. Re worming - how are the rest of the flock except Plop? If they are OK then carry on worming. If they are still under the weather I would stop. I always think little bodies should only be fighting on one front at a time. I'd be surprised if worming was Philip's issue, you would have seen them by now if he had a heavy burden. Are you sure he doesn't have a mite/lice problem on him/in his quarters? I don't suppose he's moulting heavily and moping? But I suspect its something more serious and internal. Regarding probs when newbies arrived. This is quite common I'm afraid. They bring in new 'germs' which your flock isn't necessarily used to, so if they pick something up they don't have good resistance always. The best advice is to isolate for 2 weeks - as far away as poss from your original stock so stop airbourne transmission. So, if they've been in close proximity from Day1 then this may well have happened. In addition birds get stressed with change and moving house/having newbies arrive counts as major stress! On the basis we can't undo whats been done, lets move on. Lets hope Philip gets sorted. I'll reply about Plop on the other thread. Are the rest of the newbies OK now? peepie
Oh no, poor things. Hope you get everythign sorted out OK. I'm supposed to be gettting 2 newbies today and now am having second thoughts...... I've promised son though...... We had a similar problem with some tropical fish years ago, when we put some new ones in, they killed off all the others and ti took ages to get the tank sorted out again and free from whatever bug it was they had. Hope they are feeling better soon. Keep doing what you are doing for them. xxxx
abwsco
Sorry to read they're not good again today Tricia Have you tried Oregano oil at all or even dried oregano if you can get some today.
Patricia W
Plop has gone to the coop in the sky; Phillip is back on Baytril and inside looking miserable. I'll keep you all posted Tricia
Daphne
Very very sorry to hear that Tricia You know you did all the right things for her in her short life. My fingers are crossed for Philip.
sandyhas3chucks
I would go along with everthing Daphne said, but guessing as it now these eve you will have been to the vet. An oregano oil product would IMO be helpful. It is worth remembering that antibiotic kills all goods & bad, and in a way you are setting them up for possibly another infection if there is one about. I had a sick girl on Erythromycin for 2 weeks, it did clear up her original problem, but she never was herself, the antibiotics, just like with us can make them feel ill, so i haver ot 3 days. Then rang my vet who put her on a course of baytril, she perked up after 2 days on it and has gone from strength to unbelieable strentgh. As she was in a state even months after rescue I think she was harbouring something all that time. Sooooooooooo hang on in there.. and good luck! Patricia W
Well, Phillip has survived the night. No crow this morning and he looks like he has a headache. Anyway, I've just made him some porridge and he'll hopefully have some. On we go! Tricia
Patricia W
Our roller coaster ride with Phillip is on the up again! I kept him in till lunchtime when I saw him beginning to eat and drink again ( he doesn't like porridge I've discovered), then I put him out in his carrier in the sunshine with his ladies. He was a bit hesitant for a while and did a lot of standing around, but in the last hour os so he has crowed and seems much more like his old self. He's just taking himself off to bed with the girls and so I'm leaving him there tonight. I have to say, I feel more comfortable syringing the Baytril in than putting in the water - but I might change my mind when he's better and fighting me! Fingers crossed. Daphne
Well done Tricia - you're giving the boy every chance, fingers crossed he continues to progress
Patricia W
I've just got nervous and brought him back in. He is obviously feeling better as he tried to object! Tricia
Jools
He'll be easier to syringe in the morning if he's in your custody! However, don't underestimate the importance of the boost he gets from being with his wives during the day either.
Patricia W
The power of women! Thanks for your help Tricia
Chook n Boo Mum
Sorry to hear of poor Plop, RIP little one I hope Phillip makes a recovery & carries on improving Syringing is not easy, but sometimes it just has to be done {{hugs}} Sha x
Patricia W
Thanks Wild Mum. We woke up to a croaky crow so he's on the mend. It also took my OH's very firm holding of him this morning for me to syringe him so his strength is improving! He's now back with the girls so they can look after him today. I'm just hoping that this course of Baytril will do the trick. Oh, and Babs is sneezing so I think it really is a cold that has been doing the rounds, rather then anything sinister. Plop was a one off. Anyway this weekend, I'm searching for Oregano Oil, Citricidal ... anything else? Tricia
Chook n Boo Mum
....brandy for you Sha x
Patricia W
Goes without saying! I'm following in your footsteps, Wild Mum, and taking my boys who were meant to be girls back to the breeder - 4 hour return trip! I'm tempted to keep one of the boys - black laced frizzle as he is sooooo pretty! So I'll need 2 bottles. Phillip seems to be better this morning so I hope the drama is over. I hope......
