Help-what is wrong with my chickpea?? -please reply someone!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I went out to see Louise today and she looks really well but she was trying to make clucking sounds etc and can't seem to speak?!?!

She is just making a whispering noise and keeps opening her mouth to try and make sound but nothing... :(

She is acting totally normal apart from that. She is out eating etc and not hiding inside her eglu. She stoped laying eggs daily weeks ago and every now and then I get one and just assumed it is because we are going into the colder months.

Could she have a cold?? Can chickens with colds normally make sounds??

I have got my book out and have decided maybe it could be a cold or maybe she has been eating grass that is too long and is stuck in her pouchy bit.

Could she have something stuck in her her mouth?

Any tips/advice would be appreciated - thanks!

Just had another look at her. I think she might be breathing out if her mouth - she opens it evern few seconds. Should I try and clean the area??

Its so hard to tell what is wrong over the forum and I hate to see people getting no replies but its possibly because no one has a clue :(

If it was hot I would say she is panting

Does she have a snotty nose? could that be blocked forcing her to breathe through her 'mouth'

Are there any other symptoms, any swelling? does her crop feel normal?

Hi, I can't see any snotty stuff near her vents - just a bit of mud around the area but not enough to be blocking it. I don't want to scare her by handling her too much.

She is the same today altho moving around a bit less than usual. She seems a bit tired... :-(

Her poo is a bit runny and white. I put some of that her cider water in her water yesterday and some of that lime powder. Also some worming pellets in her food and cleaned the eglu out and put red mite power all inside (basically everything I can think of!!).

I haved ordered some of thar respire stuff just in case it is a cold but it won't be here for a few days :-(

She did lay an egg this morning which is impressive if she is unwell!!

Maybe she has got a blockage in her crop?? she is looking very plump?? maybe i will try massaging the area... failing that - a trip to the vet tomorrow then. I have never taken a chicken to the vet yet!!

Hello don't they worry you. Check her crop in the morning and see if its empty, if not come back and someone will give you advice.

Don't worry about stressing her picking her up it's better to work out whats wrong so you can help her. If you hold her against you she'll calm down as you calm down and its better for them to get used to it. Then you can wipe her beak and check her nostrils and listen to her breathing. If its a bit crackly its probably a nasal discharge, you can also put your ear on her back and listen to breathing. If its her chest you will hear a different crackle to her beak.

Sounds like she is feeling poorly if she's looking plump they sort of fluff their feathers up. :D
