Water bubbles in eye.

Recommended Posts

Hi, Bianca scared me today! She'd been fine all day and still is, but earlier while in the garden on she suddenly slowed down, went quiet and her beak gaped open and shut. I immediately picked her up and brought her into the bathroom to have a good look at her.

Her face looked totally fine, then I noticed there was water coming out of her eyes, but like bubbles. She also seemed to have something in her throat hence the gaping beak and she also shook her head. I wiped her eyes with cotton wool and dripped some water down her throat. Her throat seemed better after this, but she shook her head and scratched her ear once or twice.

She gobbled up some mealworms and did a normal poo or two.

She seemed better when I put her to bed, but her eyes were still watery/bubbles in the corners.

About an hour before this I had let her watch my other hen lay an egg. I'd also put new sawdust in the coop and liberally dusted with red mite powder as I usually do every month to no ill effect. Could this be the cause if she ate some?

She is a hen who suddenly stops and goes to bed in a desperate way. This happened about the time she would go to bed, but I know she wasn't herself.

I'll check on her in a while to see if she is okay.

Thanks,

Bubbly eyes is a sign of mycoplasma - a respitatory infection. It needs treating by a vet with antibiotics - they will probably prescribe either Baytril or Tylan. See how she is tomorrow, if she's still bubbly then thats what it will be (possibly with a rattly chest developing) and you need to take her to the vet. The other symptoms you describe are most likely just a coincidence.

Thanks for your very quick reply. I've only had her 3 weeks and was integrating her with 3 other hens. one other is also new from a different place.

I guess I'll need to treat all 4 chickens?

I'll check her tomorrow and also phone the vet just in case.
