Chickaboo
Phoebe is currently going through quite a bad moult , and yesterday I washed her bottom (in warm water with a drop of tea tree and lavendar oil if you please) as her fluffy knickers had got a bit pooey - she's on antibiotics constantley due to sterile peritonitis (another story) so it makes her poo's a bit runny. However, when I washed her I noticed a) It was a bit creamy white around her vent, not sure if this is just poo, or could she have mild thrush due to the anitbiotics? b) A few tiny sort of mite things around her vent. She has no mites anywhere else on her that I can see, theres none in the eglu and they have plastic bars and I always sprinkle a bit of diamateaus earth around. Also, Daphne doesn't have a thing on her. Are these red mites or something similar? Otherwise she is well, and her vent is nice and clean. She is dry all over her comb and has made it bleed very slightly where she is scratching, but I am pretty sure this is just due to the irritation of the moult. What would anyone recommend I do? Plum
If she has a dirty bottom she is vulnerable to fly strike (lice hatching around vent) but you describe them as mites. If I was you I would spray her with Johnsons spray for lice it will kill both. The creamy colour may just be the skin staying wet because of the dirty bum but I would observe it now she is clean to see if it improves. If its thrush you will have the same sort of signs as when a human gets it, white plaques, bit of inflamation and a smell. Hope she's ok. Guess she is vulnerable having the peritonitis. Jools
Just to add that it might be a good idea to trim around her bum a little to stop her droppings getting stuck to her feathers and compounding the problem.
Egluntyne
The 'mite things' around her vent are probably lice eggs. I'd give her a Spray with Jonhnsons Anti mite Spray. * not licensed for use on poultry in UK An egg withdrawal of 48 hours applies.
Chickaboo
Thanks I'll give both those things a try.
chelsea
Guess she is vulnerable having the peritonitis. Ella my gal with sterile peritonitis often gets a dirty bum because when she poos it sometimes gets "caught" on the swollen bum area. We give her a bum wash weekly with a bowl of warm water with ecover and sponge. Towel dry and then we apply a "tea tree" solution spray which I bought from Flyte so Fancy - we spray this on the feathers around the vent area to keep her nice and "fresh" and prevent fly strike. I think she actually quite likes her bum wash.
