Chook n Boo Mum
I've done the same here Sha. It breaks your heart. The worst thing is that when they go broody next spring I know I will fall for it all again. Do you really think it's possible not to get attached ....... I would be interested to know what happened to their mum, as I had to do the same with one of mine with chicks this year, she wasn't eating herself just giving everything to the babies. Collapsed in the garden one day and couldn't walk. I had to feed her by hand holding her away from the chicks, they were greedy little tinkers, but so adorable. I am in the position of not having fertilised eggs on tap.........or at least didn't until I started "collecting" boys .........so would be able to go the broody cage route or choose to purchase some eggs, though never for Buffie again sadly...she was a fantastic mum but only snacked a little during her "confinement" & once the Bufflings started to feather up was feeding them rather than herself.........long story short I ended up massaging an impacted crop, syringing food into her & feeding her on my lap, this was when the Bufflings learned to climb on my shoulders, greedy little monsters that they are ........she left them at 10-11 weeks & is now back with the big girls. She's had another bout of impacted crop recently but recovered really quickly using maggots as the remedy of choice They may be "just chickens" to many people, but never to us, I was beside myself with worry over Buffie, as many on here will confirm as they helped me through the nightmare, for which I am eternally greatful Sha x
