Background info...dearest darling hubby and I are off to collect a run and extension from Essex tomorrow.

 

 

Dearest hubby has just asked me if we want to make a day of it and did I want to look around on the internet for places of interest in the area.

 

 

Well, a chicken shop is a place of interest, I thought.

 

 

I found Essex Chickens on Google and thought I'd ask on here.

 

 

Haven't told him yet.

Ok, let's try this from another angle...

 

Can anybody recommend a poultry place that I can visit somewhere loosely between the Tiptree area of Essex and Lowestoft that is open all the time and that I don't need to make an appointment at? If there happened to be brahmas, cochins or pekins about then that would be a bonus, purely from an aesthetic point of view, you understand.

I got all my chickens from Smilers Farm and have found them then and on subsequent visits very very helpful. One of mine was unwell after a week of getting her and the guy took her back made her well with antibiotics and I collected her a week later. No charge for board and lodging.

 

I would recommend them to anyone as I have been really pleased with the service they have given us.

 

They also do lots of different breeds of chickens as well as hybrids.

I can see gold partridge and dark brahmas.

I visited there a few months ago and found them very helpful.

 

I'm new to keeping chickens and wanted to know more about looking after them.... they answered all my questions.... so now I'm looking forward to becoming a chicken owner!

 

When I've finished moving house and built myself a coop I shall go back there to get my chickens.

I'm living in Benfleet at the moment, but in the process of moving to Hullbridge. (It all depends on the speed of the solicitors!!)

So if it's closed today, when are you going? I work in Southend (Right by the airport) and go past wickford off the a130 on my way home. I work till 5 though - don't suppose you'd be visiting that late as i guess all the hens would be asleep. (I'd have loved a get together too. *stamps foot*)

 

Janty - have you visited http://www.hens4homes.co.uk , http://www.upsonsfarm.co.uk/ or http://www.barlingpoultry.co.uk/index.htm ? They are the only other Essex places i know of, although they may not have anything fancy, plus i think you may need to arrange an appointment. Might be useful though.

Upsons Farm (nearest to me) are good for surplies, never bought hens from them. They don't actually keep them on site, they order them in when you want them.

 

I wasn't keen on that idea as I would like to see them first. At Smilers I was able to choose the ones I wanted
