Is poo that contains bright yellow bits normal?

Recommended Posts

We have a Silkie that does not lay (yet?). I think she is about 10 months old (Jules if you are out there can you confirm?) This week on emptying the ppo tray htere is lots of poo with yellow bits- as bright as egg yolk in it. Is it normal and should I be concerned? The hen herself seems absolutely fine and is eating normally etc. She shares the eglu with Jimi, a crested Poland- who does lay so I am assuming that it is her poo and not that of Jimi. Any thoughts or advice would be most welcome.

I had a girl who did poo's that sound similar to your girls- they looked as though they had bright yellow 'cooked egg yolk' in them. I looked at all the pictures of chicken poo I could find in a bid to diagnose her problem but none of them looked anything like!

This was after a long period of not being able to pin point the problem she was suffering from... limping, weight loss etc. I finally worked out that she had a calcium deficiency- to cut a long story short, she'd been laying normally but extracting calcium from her system to compensate. By the time I'd realised what was going on, she no longer layed but kept producing these strange droppings. I wondered if she was still able to produce the egg but not the shell.

Sadly, she didn't respond to supplements and antibiotics and died about a month ago.

I just wondered if it might just be that your girl could do with some limestone flour or zocal d in her diet?

Retford Poultry Vets do a brilliant postal service for droppings diagnosis .... yep it's poo obsession at the next level!

If you email them with the symptoms, they'll advise which test/tests are the most appropriate. You just put the droppings sample in the post to them and they give you the results and recommended treatment by return.

Their website is www.retfordpoultry.co.uk and they have an enquiry form for you to complete, which they reply to very quickly. I've just used them for my annual parasitology test because I've heard good things about them and wanted to try them out.

Thank you for your posts. Sorry to hear of your loss Groovychick. :(

Thank you... hope I haven't worried you, I just remember being unable to identify similar droppings in all the photos on the forum! I'll be interested to find out how you get on with Retfords...

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your girl. xx
