Swine Flu vaccination.

Recommended Posts

If someone has asked this already, can you point me in the direction of the thread.

I am due to have my vaccination next week but I am a little nervous about it.

It wouldn't have bothered me a year ago but for most of this year I have been working for a pharmaceutical company that makes injectable drugs so I am now well informed about development/manufacturing/testing times of drugs.

Has anyone had the vaccination already and can tell me its ok and they haven't had any dodgy side effects.

We havent got ours in yet at work but a friend in Burton on Trent hosp had it and told my dad she felt ill after it. She is prone to exageration though. Still not sure whether to have myself as nurses are advised too. All my patients are watching to see if I have it and if I survive they will have it. Charming

Definitely have it if you are offered it. I am desperate to get mine but our GP won't be geared up for weeks yet.

Flu vaccines are developed on a short schedule every year, and every year it is a new vaccine. The base of the vaccine is the same, it is just the strains of flu against which it gives protection that differ. That is why all flu vaccines every year are developed to a much shorter schedule than normal vaccines.

It is much, much safer to be vaccinated than to risk getting swine flu, and much, much safer than taking drugs if you get swine flu. If you have been called for a vaccine it is because you are vulnerable and therefore there is a good reason to have it.

All flu vaccines can make you feel a bit like you have a mild virus illness for a few days afterwards but that is absolutely nothing compared to full-blown flu. The only reason not to have it is if you are allergic to eggs, but if you were, I guess you wouldn't be on this forum :)

I feel it hasn't been tested enough and I really don't want my kids being guinea pigs. And I am also not happy about the adjuvents used in the SKG one. SO for those reasons, my three won't be having it. My YD will probably get a letter as her immune system is weakened by some other drugs she is on. But I feel that any risks from not having the vaccine are so very, very small, I do not want to put her, or any of them, through it.

Sometimes, I hate being 'the parent' who has to make these sort of decisions :(

I am asthmatic so should have it but have a few doubts. Not many Docs and nursing staff want it. I got my kids vaccintaed against ordinary flu this yr as they have inhalers for chest infections. OH also had it as he had pneumonia yrs ago. i always have the oridanary flu jab. Feeling grot today - no temp but stiff neck and permanent headache so rang in sick. YS sick too so we will cuddle up in bed and chilll

My eldest has had the jab this week. Her arm is very sore and she was told she would feel like she has a hangover for several days. She was disappointed to develop a sore throat too. She had a flu jab and the swine flu jab at the same time.

I think the media have a field day with all of this, swine flu vac is no different to any other seasonal flu jab, it was just too late to get it in this year, next year it will included in the annual injection & we will all be paniking about something else, I'm having mine on Monday so I'll let you know

I agree Tiggy the media have left vunerable people scare witless re having jab. I am just not really wanting another injection just yet, had flu one several weeks ago, tetanus a month ago as managed to get rusty nail in hand and due Hep B booster for work. hate needles despite my job but I probably will have the swine flu one just not just yet being a wuss re needles.
