HI

Hi Em - Welcome! I remember that excitment - watch out you'll have 20 chickens and several eglus if you're not stronger than the rest of us here- see Space Chicks link!

I use wood shavings in the nest box for mine. I can't easily get Easibed or the other types of horse bedding. I used straw at first but they kicked it out and it never felt very good for very long. Others use shredded paper, but some chooks seem to eat it.

It's a bit of trial and error really - but if you can get the horse type bedding I would go for that.

Part of the pleasure is naming them. Think of a theme and go for it. Mine are Polands with bouffant hair do's so I have

Joy, Teddie and Babs - the Beverly Sisters

Madonna

Shirley Bassey

Dusty Springfield

Sandie Shaw

I did have Tina Turner but s/he turned out to be Ike Turner so had to go.

Then I have Phillip and Phillipa - and thereby hangs a tale!

Have a look at people's signatures and I think there is even a thread of Omlet names somewhere..

It is very exciting, isn't it?

I'm Welsh, so despite my English/Irish husband's worries over pronunciation, mine all have Welsh names. However they are easy to pronounce and relatively Anglicised ones (for now). I already have a series of names in waiting for my next chickens, but you still have to fit the name to the chicken's personality!

Good luck with your chickens.

I'm getting three ex-batts on Sunday and have tentatively named them Agatha, Muriel and Jane (after favourite authors) but know that they might not end up as that.

I have three already called Ena, Wonky and Middle Hen (Ena was the bullied one when we got them, so she got a name, but we couldn't bring ourselves to name the bullies, so they became 'Wonky Comb' for obvious reasons and Middle Hen because she was neither Ena nor Wonky! Then the names stuck)
