Plum
Hello welcome, being plastic it makes it easier to clean but you can still get redmite. I use poultryshied to wash the cube and dust the girls and nestbox with redmite powder and luckily have never seen any.
Kit
Hi Definitely I have an eglu and we were infested with red mites during late summer
chick wiggle
Hi and welcome to the forum. The cube or eglu is not immune to red mite. It just has fewer places for them to hide and is much easier to clean and look after. I also use poultry shield, red mite powder and diatom to prevent the little beasties and so far, touch wood, I havent had any. Let us know what you decide to do
yttocs
so is poultry shield, the same as jay's fluid?
chick wiggle
No, i dont know whats in jeyes fluid but my guess would be some chemicals that i wouldnt want my girls any where near. Poultry shield is specifically designed for chicken houses, it protects against red mite and does not harm the chickens at all. You just spray it on after cleaning the house and let it dry. Im glad you asked though That is what this forum is for and we have all asked what we thought were silly questions only to be put right - there is no such thing as a silly question on this forum. So ask away
Egluntyne
Poultry Shield and Jeyes Fluid are not the same thing at all. Poultry Shield is safer and specifically deals with red mite. The Jeyes Fluid blurb does say that it can be used to clean hen houses, but it is safest to only let the hens near the house when it is completely dry. Gelbel
The Jeyes Fluid blurb does say that it can be used to clean hen houses, but it is safest to only let the hens near the house wen it is completely dry. I agree with Egluntyne. I use Jeyes but only with a really deep clean and ONLY when I can be sure everything will dry before the girls have to be confined back to the run. Jeyes is a bit of a psychological thing for me - the smell makes me feel I am killing any nasties. I also kill two birds with one stone (probably not the best phrase to use on a chook forum) as I scrub the steps or path with the excess water in the bowl - anywhere the girls made the 'loo for the day'.
