LisaJane
Hi All, I posted a week or so ago about rat problems in our Eglu run. After thoroughly rat-proofing the run I have been feeling happy that there are no unwanted guests visiting our girls! Went down to put them to bed last night and the newspaper that I put in their litter tray had been pulled out and shredded all over their run. It looked as though someone had taken scissors to it and cut it into strips. Very odd! My initial thought was that something had got in but both myself and DH thouroughly inspected the run and surrounds and can see absolutely no sign of entry. Is it likely that the girls did it? Is this usual chicken behaviour? Apologies if it is a slightly weird question!
Egluntyne
Not a weird question at all...and yes, the hens have probably done it. They like to re-arrange their bedrooms. A bit of nesting behaviour, thats all.
Chicken Shirl
They all love paper. This is one of my hens who fancied laying behind the computer yesterday. She has ripped the cover on the dictionary in the proccess. and ended up going back to the washing basket in the utitily room where she always lays her eggs. Redwing
I used to line my chick hutches with newspaper I dont bother anymore as they always managed to get it out from under the bedding and shred it Just as well they are not about when the postman comes

On the newspaper question, I line the poo trays with newspaper and bedding, in the cube they can't get at it, so it always stays put. In the eglu they always seem to pull the newspaper out of the front and shred it in the run .
chickencam
Mine did this while we were away last time because the pet carer was putting the strip down the rap too close to the end. I usually leave a gap of about 4 inches at the end of the ramp, they tend to leave the paper alone then.
Fur 'n' Feathers
Yep! Ours do the same. In fact we've given up packing the cube nest area drainage slot with newspaper, as they pull it out from underneath
