My Yolko is acting strangely

Recommended Posts

Hi Skye

Have just read this thread with interest. Cough (age unknown) has had the heaviest moult I have ever witnessed. She has minimal feathers and also currently resembles a porcupine. Our run set up sounds identical and today we noticed Cough had exactly the same symptoms as Yolko - shivering, walking side ways, funny legs, low to the ground etc. It is very worrying and we are at the vets with her in the morning. She is eating and drinking ok and wants to be with the others. I gave her a load of corn this morning as it helps keep them warm. I'll keep you posted.

Hi there redfrock

Just seen your message, how coincidental that both our girls have/had such similar symptoms. How did it go at the vets the other day? How is Cough feeling now?

The leg/walking thing is really worrying, isn't it. After some rest indoors and a course of Baytril, Yolko's walking has returned to normal, I'm not sure which of the two it was that had the effect.

I'm glad you said Cough is eating and drinking ok. Mine wasn't for a while and it's made her pretty thin, although her feathers are coming in at an AMAZING rate and I would say she has a light covering all over now, although they have yet to spread out and offer her full warmth and protection. Except for the very cold night last Thursday, she has been living full-time back outside with her friends for almost a week. Fingers crossed for a full recovery, bless her.

 Hope Cough is feeling better soon. Looking forward to hearing how she is.

Hi Skye

sorry for the delay in replying! Well, in the end we didn't take her to the vets as she showed signs of rallying, and I have to say that as with Yolko, I am convinced that it was the extremely heavy moult that made Cough behave so strangely. Within less than a week she had gone from being a porcupine with a mere whisper of feathers to being smothered in a load of stubby little ones that were waiting to burst out into their full potential. She stopped shivering and started walking better. She is now fully covered in feathers, although she still has places that need bit more work, but she is no longer walking side-ways, slinking low to the ground or shivering - even in this bitter weather. I fed her up every morning with corn to warm her up for the day and increased their daily lifeguard to super-strength, and it seems to have done the trick. She is still a little thin, but that isn't surprising given what she has been through. Her feathers have a beautiful shine to them and she has a good appetite and is back to being a cheeky little thing. I have never witnessed a moult to this extent nor these symptoms before and can only presume that the 2 are connected - especially as both our girls seems to have had pretty much the same symptoms and the rallied. Mind you I think I would walk funny and shiver if I was running around with no clothes on in this weather!:lol:

 Redfrock is right, two of mine had a late and vicious moult; both looked poorly and hunched, not at all their usual selves. I fed them up on warm mash, meal worms and growers mash with some NetTex Nutri drops in the warm mash; they soon rallied.

Alfalfa is a great supplement for ailing chooks too... packed full of vits, minerals and protein too.
