Shirl
Wondered if anyone has read this book. The book people have free P&P until midday wednesday so I wondered if this book is any good as I'm very tempted.
Goosey Lucy
I got it out of the library (because it had a cockerel on the front ) but didn't finish it, it wasn't really my cup of tea. Not quite sure why, just didn't enjoy it. But I'm sure somebody else would :anxious:if they like her style of writing. Not enough farming and too much other stuff if I remember correctly. It was when I was going through my 'i want a Smallholding' phase.
Guest
I'm reading Brian Viner's 'Tales of the country' got it in the local garden centre for £1.99 and it's really good, not so much about a farm but more the trials and tribulations of moving from London to rural Herefordshire. Very funny, laugh out loud. There was one bit where he had to take his baby daughter into a public loo with him. She was asleep in her carry cot but while he was in there, she woke up. He said "Hello little sausage, have you woken up?" and the bloke in the next cubicle ran out of the building! It's just got so many LOLs in it I've got his follow up 'Pheasants Revolt' to read next. If you want something more about farming then I'd recommend 'The Funny Farm' and 'Sheepwrecked' by Jackie/Jacqui (sp?) Moffat. Again, another tale of upping sticks and moving to the countryside but more farming based.

TheGirlsMum
I read this but was disappointed at just how much money was thrown at the project and little hands on experiences, I obviously don't live in their world.
Shirl
Ok I don't think I'll bother with that one then but will look out for the others. Thanks
Lesley
I read this but was disappointed at just how much money was thrown at the project and little hands on experiences, I obviously don't live in their world. I read excerpts about her life on the smallholding and felt the same..........
Willow
I enjoyed it and felt it was a wonderful example of how not to go into smallholding If you like her style of writing (which I do) it's an easy read. I kept being appalled at their naivety and did a google search to see if there was an update. Without wanting to put in any spoilers I wasn't surprised at the outcome ! I can't reconcile the person in the book with the editor/founder of Spare Rib I discovered Spare rib in the college library when I was doing my A-Levels. It was quite an influence on me so to find her so clueless was disappointing. I think it might be a useful book for prospective smallholders. If you're not horrified at her approach you definitely shouldn't become a smallholder.
The Dogmother
I read this but was disappointed at just how much money was thrown at the project and little hands on experiences, I obviously don't live in their world. I read excerpts about her life on the smallholding and felt the same.......... I read those too and thought the same thing Lesley, in fact I was ranting at some of the things they were doing She has an entertaining writing style though.
