francesca88
Hi everyone! I just wanted to share a few pics of my new quail that hatched today! I bought a dozen eggs from eBay on the 10th December, and 10 have successfully hatched! I'm so pleased Edited March 9, 2010 by Guest

Guest
awwwww, what breed of quail are they? we're doing the same in the spring. As we're keeping them outside 9once they're old enough) we decided to wait til it was a bit warmer. what incubator and brooder do you use? francesca88
awwwww, what breed of quail are they? we're doing the same in the spring. As we're keeping them outside 9once they're old enough) we decided to wait til it was a bit warmer. what incubator and brooder do you use? They're a mix of white, golden and brown Japanese quail. I'm going to keep them inside till the spring, too. I used a Brinsea mini advance incubator, and at the moment they are just in a plastic storage box with some non-slip matting on the floor, with an infra red heat lamp! They're absolutely fascinating, I can't believe how much energy they have!

francesca88
Chicks are now 10 days old, and cannot believe how fast they are growing! They have a good coat of feathers now - Edited March 9, 2010 by Guest
Lesley
Wow! - haven't they grown! Do you know which sex they are yet?
Guest
They grow so quickly don't they are so cute too. It never ceased to amaze me that at 6 weeks they ere fully grown and laying eggs!
Lesley
Six weeks??? - I've never looked into hatching quail.....I didn't realise it was just 6 weeks! Nice to see you back Dilly
Lewis
Aww They do grow fast! - one of the reasons its best to have them on a higher protein feed like Turkey crumb. The dust that comes off their feathers in unbelievable POL is 6-8 weeks Lesley (can't sleep? )
francesca88
I haven't sexed them yet as they only seem to have grown feathers on their wings, backs and tails so far! Their chests and head are still fluffy I can believe that they only take 6 weeks to get to their full size now - I just cannot believe how fast they grow! At the moment I am feeding them on plain old chick crumb - is there somewhere I can get crumb that is a bit higher in protein?
Lewis
At the moment I am feeding them on plain old chick crumb - is there somewhere I can get crumb that is a bit higher in protein? I used turkey crumb off ebay - there's none listed at the moment. Marriages turkey crumb is what I used, there is also Smallholder which is what you'd be looking for, or another brand of turkey crumb. There is some for sale online here but the postage is expensive! You could always give them a little bit of scrambled egg for a bit extra protein It just means they grow a bit better and their feathers are stronger. There was a post about the protein content of some feeds, hope Emma won't mind me posting this: "Finally this is a size comparison of chicks fed on A&P [chick crumb](left) and Marriage's [turkey crumb] (right). The bird on the right is just under a week older than the bird on the left. They're from the same group of parents." I know they do grow a lot in a week ... but not that much
francesca88
Wow... that is a huge difference! Well, I have a backlog of 31 eggs in the fridge at the moment (!) so I'll feed them some scrambled eggs until I source some turkey crumb. Thanks for your help!
