Milliechick
Hi, one of my Pekins seems to have developed a 'cough' today. I let them all out in the garden and she just sat on the path with her eyes closed, and only moved when i put some corn down for them. Then later started what seems like coughing. I have now seperated her from the others, but am wondering what the best thing is that I can do? Has anybody had something similar happen? Thank You! Redwing
hmm, tricky - any other symptoms? runny nose, sneezing? If its just coughing could it have anything stuck in its throat/crop? a drop of olive oil will do her no harm (syringe in beak - gently and slowly) and may help dislodge anything there, a gentle massage of the crop may also help
Milliechick
Hi, have checked this morning, and she is sneezing a bit, the crop is fine. But also her eyes have closed, and are weeping. She isn't moving much, have given her some layers pellets and water with cider vinegar in. Should I use some cotton wool and water on her eyes? Daphne
That's a good idea. However, it sounds like she might have picked up a respiratory infection and if she isn't perkier tomorrow I would get her to the vet for some antibiotics. In the meantime, keep her warm, tempt her with food (wet food is good - easy to eat and gets some liquid into her) and unless she positively likes ACV I would give her plain water - thats just a personal thing, mine aren't overkeen on ACV and when they are ill it is vital to get liquid into them. Milliechick
What wet food is good? If this is a respiratory infection can it be passed on to the others?
Daphne
Try pellets/mash in water or warm water - thats best as she'll get the most nutrition from it. You could add her favourite treats (eg grapes, sweetcorn, mixed corn) if you like to tempt her as if she's feeling ropey she probably won't eat much. I've also had success with wet weetabix (ie in water) for very ill chooks - if necessary I hand feed. She might be contagious. If you have separate accomodation it would be sensible to move her. You could also bring her in, in a cat basket/dog cage or similar. Depending on her size even a large cardboard box with air holes would do. I know this all sounds a bit drastic, but prevention can be better/cheaper than having to cure the whole flock. If you do end up taking her to the vet he/she will probably prescribe just for her, but you should keep an eye on the rest and if they start to exhibit the same symptoms then you'll need more meds. Redwing
I agree with Daphne, separate her, she could have Mycoplasma
Milliechick
Thanks for the advice. I have found a dog cage that I have put up next to the others, and she has a box to go into, with plenty of bedding! And covers on top, so hopefully she will start to improve! Egluntyne
I agree that separating her and a trip to the vet are both necessary as her symptoms do sound like mycoplasma.
Milliechick
Hi, thanks so much for all the advice. I'll get her to the vets ASAP!
Egghead68
How did you get on?
Milliechick
Hi, unfortunately we were too late, couldn't get her to the vet that day. It did look as if she was picking up at one point, eating and drinking, but she didn't make it through the night. I think it was the Mycoplasma, I found the information on the internet and it all matched with her symptoms. And the weather was awful, which also didn't help! Thanks for asking
