Foxes - WIR - 19 gauge wire ok ?

Recommended Posts

I am planning my WIR and have decided [ for the moment anyway ] to go for an avaries4U which seem to be so popular [ lucky me ! ]

Before I go ahead and order I was wondering if anyone can reassure me that the build quality is as good as it looks ?

Is 19 gauge wire ok to protect the chooks from foxes and maybe the odd badger ? I am planning to leave the eglu door open at night once the days start getting longer so I can havee some little sleep ins this year.

Yes 19g wire is absolutely fine

16g is perfect but more expensive

however I understand that all is not equal. Apparently some imports are thinner than you would expect.

My run is 19g but there are places where it has snapped. (for no reason)

I have a known fox population and also have dogs.

I have NO DOUBT at all in my mind that the 19g could be munched open by a terrier, with very little effort and therefore have reinforced the lower parts with 16g from hills of Devon.

It IS a bit awkward but the thinner 19g also sort of gets away from you easier. (and bites back more :) )

Same here! We bought 19g pvc-coated weld mesh and it's snapped in places - we even wondered if the 19g included the PVC :shock:

So we've also reinforced the bottom of the run too, doubling up with chain-link fencing from Wickes http://www.wickes.co.uk/Chain-Link-Fencing/invt/187738
