Sal the Gal
Dear All, You may remember that back in the summer I bought two chicks to solve a broody hen problem. This worked like a charm, but six months on, both Silkie chicks turn out to be boys. They are absolutely lovely and I don't have close neighbours, so the crowing isn't a worry. I just wonder if it is possibe to keep two cockerals together. They aren't fighting at the moment, although from time to time they do square up to each other! One seems more dominant with the girls, but they all get on fine - at the moment. Does anyone have experience of keeping more than one cockeral? Look forward to hearing. Best wishes Sallyanne

kannie
I was speaking with someone on Saturday who had had more than one cockerell sucessfully, however they did have lots of hens! You may need to get more hens to right the balance. Actually, thinking of the poor hen, I imagine that 2 cocks to one hen might not be a good idea for her sake! Jools
I think that Silkie cockerals are the exception that prove the rule. A friend of mine keeps her Silkies all together and she has several cockerals with no great problems. I agree with Kannie though on making sure you have enough hens to "go round"
Lesley
I agree - I think each cockerel needs around 8 lady friends
PurpleHen
oooh - good excuse for more chooks
The Dogmother
I agree - I think each cockerel needs around 8 lady friends Otherwise the poor girls get harrassed and spend their time avoiding the amorous attentions of their feathered romeos
Sal the Gal
Dear All, Thanks for all the helpful tips. Infact, a friend of mine has promised me some Silkie Hens (that she hatch in the summer) Once she is quite sure they are girlies. I kind of thought it would be good to get some more ladies anyway - so that is what I will do. Thanks again and best wishes. The Dogmother
That's good news sallyanne. Silkie hens are great broodies, they sit on anything you put under them
