lisaroo2
Hi All Now, I hope you're all sitting comfortably cos I've made two new recipes today!!! One was Clarets leek and chicken pie and the other was a carrot soup recipe that I found. The trouble is that in the carrot soup recipe it told me to put in 2 tablespoons of honey but this has made it WAY too sweet. Is there anything I can put in the soup to 'rescue' it, ie taken some of the sweetness away? Thanks for the help...
majorbloodnock
To a certain extent, salt or salty additives (anchovies, soy sauce, Thai fish sauce etc.) can reduce the sweetness of something. However, this is a bit of smoke and mirrors, since it's not actually taking any sweetness away but adding a contrast to make it seem such. Therefore there's only a certain amount of "desweetening" you can do before it simply tastes far too seasoned.
majorbloodnock
Just as a thought, though, you might want to experiment on a bowlful with a different effect. Carrot and orange soup is fairly well understood, but you may find lime or even lemon juice will work with it. In that case, the sharpness of the citrus juice will help counteract the sweetness anyway. Worth a punt.
bluekarin
would putting a potato in it work? I've heard this can help when something is too salty, maybe it would work with something that is too sweet
Egluntyne
I'd suggest a squirt of lemon juice.
Rhapsody
white wine or cider vinegar
TAJ
Sweey & sour is the obvious answer - any acide (lemon juice/vinegar would assist). Tracy
