Silkies and Pekins friends?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm going to be getting a new addition in February, it's a black Silkie. I'm also looking to get a couple more chooks, but I haven't decided what to get yet. Is it right that the breeds tend to stick together? I have an existing Pekin, so I thought I might get her a friend, but that would leave one Silkie.

Help!

(Thank You)!!!

through my intro experience they tend to stick with the ones the were introduced with. i would definately recommend introducing 2 rather than 1 as it will make it easier and prevent the new'one getting bullied as much.

i had 2 silies and a cochin which i got the same day, so they went through the intos together and they all stick together- rather amuzing seeing 2 little balls of fluff with the hugest thing ive ever seen!

hope ive helped!

As we have just been integrating pekins and a silkie with my mob, I see that the silkie does know her place (at the bottom of the order) but it doesn't stop her sneaking in and grabbing food underneath the fat fluffies (they can't see her). She was brought up with the pekins and is fine although she gets the odd reminder peck now and again. On the whole she seems to be adapting better with both flocks - hopping back and forth between the two.

And she likes mud baths - what fluff?

Hello, thank you for your advice.

I believe the Silkie is Bantam size, but the breeder only has the one. I've found another one from a different breeder, but I believe it Large Fowl :eh: (not too sure what the difference in size is)???

And she also has Pekins and Frizzles, so completely confused now!

I'll just have to wait and choose when we see them.

I have pekins, silkies and a frizzle and they are all about the same size - ish

All of 'em

Sadly little Pip, my mini white silkie was PTS before Christmas but she lived happily with the pekins and Frizzle. She was bottom of the pecking order however but she was BFFs with Frazzles the Frizzle so she had her own pine cone as a bodyguard!

Now I have 14 (say it fast and it doesn`t sound so many :anxious:) bantams/small chooks living together and the little group consists of two silkies, a Frizzle, four pekins, two pekin/silkie, two japanese,a polisg and orpidotte and Rum - whos Bitzas are unknown. The Pekins are still top but the Silkies are LF version and def hold ther own.

Hope that helps a bit
