Raina Posted January 22, 2010 Share Posted January 22, 2010 Hi all, My mum & sister joined a group on facebook to get a free laptop, well today they got a pop up saying that Windows has found a virus so my mum & sister clicked it once they clicked cancel on the website it had downloaded a virus. My mum googled the web name and loads of people are complaining about it. So my mum rang up my other sister who joined that FB group and the same has happened to her,this time she can't use her computers or old laptop and they can't even access the Internet on my nephews Xbox 360. After my sister told my mum this she rang up my BIL,he told us what to do on the computer and that didn't work so he's coming over tomorrow to have a look! Is it just a coincidence that both of them had gone on this group,both got the same pop up and now their computers aren't working? The site has been infected with a trojan that does a fairly convincing job of making it look like Windows is telling you about a problem. Although there are loopholes in any browser, most are fairly good at stopping potentially harmful stuff running without you having a chance to say "no". Therefore, someone malicious may choose instead to trick you into starting the install manually. One way of doing this is to create a popup with a button that you're tricked into pressing, since your browser will just see you having actively agreed to do something. Thing is that this button could be one of many, and could have almost any appearance. Including looking like a button with the word "cancel" on it....
