is there a product that kills red mite and lice that you can get for chickens

red mite lives in the cracks and crevices of the coop, not on the chook itself. So you need to kill red mite with something like poultry shield.

 

For lice (and northern fowl mite) that do live on chooks i have been using Xeno, but have since heard from Victoria Roberts that this isn't strong enough so she recommends Eprinex. I'm looking for this at the mo.

 

You can get powders, I've used them in the past but found them really messy, difficult to ensure that i got the right coverage, and so went for drops on the back of the neck.

Some seem to be more effective than others and this one works well

 

Its a good idea not to inhale any powders though so be careful when applying

 

Xeno is good if you want something to spray on, its systemic so a small application under the wing or on the neck work well

 

Johnssons lice spray (from places like Pets at Home) is good too

can you still eat the eggs after? what do you use to clean the eggs? not sure if they have either but they have been pecking at each other alot bought anti pecking spray adn a saddle but some one says it sound like lice or mites we have checked in the coop but cant seem to see anything

You need to stay off the eggs for a week after Xeno or Johnssons I think, DE has no egg withdrawl

 

some people dont bother with egg withdrawl they just dont sell the eggs during that time bt I couldnt possibly recommend that.....

 

It cold be a reason for pecking yes

Went to countrywide and bought barrier red mite powder and poultry spice , just appiled the red mite powder on them like it says just before they go into roost.

just another question can you put louse powder on while the red mite powder is on as didnet know if it would irriate their skin?

I just found lice on my girls and bought Barrier Louse Powder as that was all the local animal and pet shop had. Dusting the chooks with it was pretty messy but the number of lice does seem to have gone down already. I will reapply a week after the first application to get rid of any others still lurking there plus any hatched eggs. You can also dust the bedding with it and put it into their dust bath for self-application There is no egg withdrawal. Once you have got rid of the lice, apply it every 6 weeks as a preventative.

I should add - I think the ingredients in Barrier Red Mite Powder and Barrier Louse Powder are very similar so can be used more or less interchangeably? And therefore no need to use both? I am sure someone will correct me on that if I am wrong.

I am back to using Ivomec Eprinex* as a spot-on preventative as I found that Xeno* didn't always cut the mustard when my girls had some lice this summer. It's always best to use something like this, then a topical spray such as the Johnson's ant-mite Spray*, or the Net Tex Mite Kill Spray*

 

I tend to use a powder in their dust bath as a preventative - trying to powder a dozen indignant chooks wasn't pleasant and it didn't always work.

Mostin and I went to a talk given by Victoria Roberts last week, she said that she's currently having rows with the makers of Xeno because the solution isn't strong enough to 'do what it says on the tin'. She wholeheartedly recommended Eprinex for dealling with all the creepy crawlies - the most effective available.

i spotted lice on one of my girls and treated them all with xeno 450*, which you put a couple of drops between their wings. this was easy to do when roosting. it has also got rid of all the lice instantly and worms them too you do have to withdraw the eggs for a week though

Laurie, I have gone back to Ivomec Eprinex* for just that reason; it is broader spectrum and more economical too as it's sold in large bottles as a cattle pour-on.
