buffie
Well anyone surprised that intensively farmed turkeys are in the news today? Not me to be honest. BBC coverage talked about farmed and sheds but showed turkeys that have access to the outside and are able to free range Not the case for BM birds Not the hysteria this time but just wondered what you felt. Will people see this and consider the conditions of intensive farming I wonder. BBx
Christian
Found the link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/suffolk/6326681.stm Funny how it is usually the barn reared birds that are always in the news. May be wrong, but I haven't heard of any 'true' free range farms being affected. Since getting chickens and looking more closely at what we eat, we always buy free range meat now! Haven't bought ready meals in months, as you can rarely tell where the ingredients come from
buffie
Yes Dan got a feeling the hysteria may not happen, everyone has now seen this before. De-sensitised by it all See what results come in for tests but the general public most proably will just stop eating turkey for a while. Be great if they put two and two together and actually get 4 BBx
ubereglu
Were they actually Bernard Matthews turkey's then? Last time we heard about them they were being raised in Brazil. Where I suspect conditions are far worse. Back to the ready meal point. Not all ready meals are made with non-free range chicken. For example, Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencers only stock and sell Free range chicken and eggs!
bellekatz
Latest news shows it is the Hn51 strain so there are now protection and monitoring zones around the farm. Just another incentive for me to get on with building a large pen for the girls to live in. I have to say that I was notified by my layers meal online supplier which I thought was pretty good of them! if you live in Suffolk there is a bird flu helpline on 08456 032
bronze
Anyone know how long it takes between a bird contracting it and dieing?
AnnieP
Shall we keep all these discussions in one place? I suggest the chickens section is a more suitable location, so please now post comments on this topic Here.
