jellykelly
I ask because two of my ex batts are bleeding. They have been confined to the run today and I think all eight of them have spent a lot of time in the coop because of the snow. I have quickly looked over the two and can't see any cuts or open wounds - this leaves me to question whether its the new feathers that have maybe been pulled and pecked out. If this is the case, what can I do to stop it?? The ex batts look pretty rough as it is with new feathers sprouting etc, - they don't need blood added to the look too. One girl was bleeding on each wing, the other on the neck.
Willow
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along but bleeding sounds more like they have been pecked. I would try and separate them myself as chickens do peck at sites of bleeding anyway.
Redwing
As new feathers emerge they are blood filled and hens do tend to peck at each other and if they uncover blood they do it more sadly You'll need to cover the blood with purple spray (from horsey/agricultural shops) or blue food colouring, if they cant see the blood they will stop pecking, keep an eye out for more blood and cover that as it appears
jellykelly
Ok, I can't get anywhere due to the snow so purple spray is out of the question at this very moment. Blue food colouring - I'm guessing I mix with a little water and spray on - or should i just dab on colour directly? It is natural food colouring. Redwing
I'd just dab it on
jellykelly
Thankyou again for your advice. I now have blue splashes to my face (one flapped having had her wings 'punked' up) and brilliant blue fingers. I'm just so messy with everything I do. The Dogmother
If they persist, then get some NetTex anti-peck spray, someone else on her said that it worked really well.
