a few q's

Recommended Posts

Firstly I have a r-com mini - I know some people don't like them as you can only hatch three eggs and I do understand why and if only one hatches, yes I will buy some day olds. (I also have sombody hatching me a batch of Light Sussex they will be merged with in a few weeks.

I got the version that comes with the viewing scope - for the kids really(!) but also because I figured you can candle in situ and it seals the lid while you use it. The temp only drops about 2 degrees and very briefly while you swap lids and I do'nt think it could change the humidity very much. I am finding myself a bit of a big kid to be honest, this is the 4th day and I have checked them loads of times  I know I should just leave well alone... but I am wondering would it really harm them as it is not like I am taking them out or even touching them? I figure under a broody they would be subject to far more fluctuation than that?

Also, I have seem pics of day three eggs showing veining- is that a bit hopeful? I am only really checking the Silver Dorking egg as the other two are Maran and Aracuna (the latter seems quite a thick shell).

I just read this post and I sound like a clueless idiot (honestly not, I have raised day olds before)..I just have never hatched myself and am finding it far too exciting :oops:

The broody hen will leave the eggs every day to eat so dont panic too much be more aware of joggling the eggs when you are changing lids and always ensure that the inside of the lids are kept clean

Day 7 is when you will start to see better development

Day 4 is when the heart starts beating so I do absolutely everything I can not to disturb the eggs between days 3 and 7

If you can hold off for a few days then do so and absolutely do not candle after the humidity rises at day 18, the lid must stay shut from then until the chicks hatch or you suspect there are problems at day 24 or so

I'm amazed they are different lids to be honest I would have thought they would have made it so the scope can be pushed on to the clear plastic lid

Maybe you should patent it!

I am not impressed with the scope tbh, and I am hoping it is the reason I am not seeing anything. I just don't think it is bright enough -plus the lights go around the egg from above, so I would think really you are only able to see the top quarter or so of the egg (which might be fine later on), I wish I hadn't wasted my money! There does seem to be less dense area now at one end(in the one egg I can actually see in). Think I will buy a candler on ebay for Saturday!
