chocolatelips
Hello, I am new here I was just looking for a bit of information/advice. I am just branching out into keeping chickens and I've kind of had my heart set on getting 6 chickens - 2 Black Rocks, 2 Warrens, 2 Pekin Bantams. I was wondering if anyone more knowledgeable than me could tell me if that would be a bad combination? And also if anyone knows of any reputable breeders of the above in either Warwickshire/West Midlands. Thank you x
Janty
I started off with big girls and pekins and it was a disaster. Although I keep mine all together now, the intros between the large girls and the bantams have to be taken very slowly to ensure success. I have recently introduced a LF Australorp, two frizzle pekins, a miniature Vorwerk and a blue bearded silkie to my lot. The five newbies lived in a cube with run inside the WIR for about three months before I let them all out together. They have been out together for a few weeks now without any problems at all. Even the silkie seems to have bonded with the big girls...she was snuggled up to a brahma on a perch when I checked on them tonight.
Janty
In response to your question about breeders, you could give Karen a call at Merrydale Poultry in Leicester.
sjp
I got my hybrids from here http://www.oakmeadowfarm.co.uk/home.htm
Redwing
I'd recommend Cotswold Chickens near Banbury for hybrids, they are excellent
sparkysmum
We've just bought two pekins (today )but I don't expect they will live with my big girls for months ,if at all.
Redwing
forgot to say that I have one Pekin that lives with bigger hens but 6 others that do not A lot of it comes down to the personalities of the hens involved but its not a good idea to buy them assuming they can be integrated, do get them if you have two coops and can keep them apart if things dont work out Maybe wither consider all bantams, some will have similar colouring to what you want and lots lay a decent sized egg too or consider all large fowl maybe getting a Cochin instead of a pekin - they are a bit similar
Egluntyne
I have three Pekins, and they don't live with the big girls. I have heard nothing but good reports about **Cotswold Chickens**
