Nicola O
Little Lily - the 'I don't know what she is chicken' - has gone broody.....again. Last year she managed to go broody FIVE times, and now, after only coming back into lay at the end of January after her winter break she's decided that four weeks of laying eggs is more than enough, thank you very much - so she's gone broody again . I'll try a 'wanted' on freecycle and see if I can get a dog cage to create a broody cage for her. unless............... she is very determined (and she's an incredibly stoppy broody)............. she is obviously deprerate to be a chooky mummy............. and I do have an empty eglu just sitting there............. I could accidentally buy some eggs............. NO, NO, NO - someone talk me out of it - I'm sure it's too early (and cold) for her to be on her own with eggs, and then I'd have the worry of what do I do with the boys. *chants* 'I must be strong, I must be strong, I must be strong....' Space Chick
I know the feeling, I have 2 girls that are persistent broodies, the broody cage is the best way to get them out of it.
Stevie
I personally wouldnt allow her to hatch any eggs.Just rememeber any cock birds will need to be found homes or culled. One of my previous hens kept going broody in her first year and she spent many a day in the upside down dog crate (to maximise airflow round her nether regions) along with plenty of cold water dunkings! Nicola O
I personally wouldnt allow her to hatch any eggs.Just rememeber any cock birds will need to be found homes or culled. Don't worry, I'm not really going to let her hatch. It's a wonderful thought but it's not right to do it just because I want it and the chicks would be cute and lovely. The girls chicks would be kept and loved, but it's not fair on any boys that hatch. I've put my post on freecycle and I hope someone can help me out - it will be the broody cage for Lily as soon as I can get one NIcola. beulah59
Have you tried putting her in a bath of cold water? Just make sure she's dry again before letting her back into the garden. Or slipping an ice pack underneath her. You can buy flat ones that would fit in a nest box. http://www.amazon.co.uk/BHL-group-179112-Thermos-Freeze/dp/B000OW5YBE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1267518441&sr=8-
