Quail housing

Recommended Posts

Can anyone let me see photo's of their please. Haven't room to stretch to an avairy and my original plans for using part of the WIR run are scuppered. However, we've a patio which has the dividing wall between us and next door and apart from plant pots now long destroyed by the chickens it only has an ivy on.............

We have one similar to this, but with a double door system.........

....and we use a little guinea pig shelter like this inside....

We have some logs, branches and rocks for them. We set it on grass at first but rats dug underneath....then we added a mesh floor but the rats burrowed underneath and terrorised the quail so we made a concrete base and secured it to that . We have a deep layer of Aubiose on the floor.

I use a rabbit hutch like this http://www.the-rabbit-hutch-shop.com/4ft-drop-hutch-and-run-with-4-x-4-run-sdh44.html#0 although I think they have got the dimensions of their photo wrong :? it's not as tall. With bubble wrap padding on the roof of the hutch and mesh run.

Works well for the quail except the hutch part is a pain to clean. If the hutch section had a slide out tray for cleaning it would be much better ! We propped up the end of the slope on bricks so it was less steep and they like running up and down.

My husband built a removable roof to keep the rain off the run as otherwise it gets very soggy in the rain. He also put wood on the back and part way down the sides to provide more shelter as they don't use the hutch to sleep in just as a change of scenery.

Thanks Lewis :) Where did you get the hutch in the bottom pic as it looks a good solid one. Was it online?

eBay :D

Tis quite good and was a good price too, £70ish I think - can't remember the seller, was a few years ago  but there's a similar one here

Looks ok Chris, the mesh looks a bit big, not sure about the quality of the wood though.

Have a look at this:

Happy Hutch have been recommended and they will replace the T & G with exterior ply at no extra cost so think we'll go for one of these

Same price but more suited :D

Wow that is a good price, although i quite like the look of the ark, :S and its easy to pick up and plop somewhere in our garden on some nice grass. I mean, all my coops i get now i add more nails and screws in to keep it together and seal it properly and then give it a few coats of cuprinol and make sure its treated etc. and so it will keep well.

And i hae loads of chicken wire with tiny holes so i can repatch that.

Might as well build one yourself then?
