Reikiranf
Does anyone have any experience of Koi Carp and if so do they have any advice? My ED and SIL have moved into a new house today and it has a pond with 6 Koi carp in it, one of which is so big I'm scared it might eat the cats None of us has ever had a pond so we don't know if we need to rush out and buy food or whether they'll be ok for a few days so any advice would be much appreciated. Snowy
They eat very little over the winter, but now the weather is warming up they will start coming to the surface to feed. Any pet store will sell large tubs of floating koi sticks - they are facinating when they surface and shlurp them up. Some become quite tame and will allow themselves to be stroked. They are lovely fish, very docile. Watch out for herons if the fish are brightly coloured. They like to doze on the surface in the sun which makes them an easy target. Carp like to stir up the detritis on the bottom of the pond so can make it look murky. A pond vacuum is useful to get rid of the muck every so often, and a decent pump and filter. If it's all set up already, you will probably have to do very little for them except cater to their appetites!
craftyhunnypie
Koi carp - like ponds as deep as possible. They will also florish & even breed in ponds with a pump in, so that the water is permanently aerated. Lots of oxygenating plant too.
