baberella
Ok so eglu coming tomorrow. Trying to finalise where to get chickens from and have now decided to panic! My worry now is sellers say their chickens are vaccinated but how do i know if this is true? What if the chickens have some horrible disease and then we eat the eggs? Does this sound really stupid???????
chickinboy
Firstly, breathe!!! Don't panic. I always think that having a few nerves a good thing - it's means you're going to be a responsible chicken keeper. Some say that vaccinations aren't a worry...don't know about that, but I would definately suggest buying from a reputable supplier (d'oh), in particular one that you've seen listed in the suppliers list on here, or one that people recommend. You can't do better than an Omleteer recommendation. Wherever you end up, have a good look around, ask to see 'behind the scenes', or even the parents if it's a small operation. Personally I tend to think that those suppliers who have set 'rules' about not supplying one hen on her own, no reservations, no random delivery arangements suggest the most vigilent and responsible suppliers. Where are you? I'm sure there will be someone on here that has bought some near you.... If'you're anywhere near Oxfordshire, then I can't recommend Cotswold Chickens enough! baberella
I know cotswold looks lovely but quite far away! Someone recommended the place i visited today. The guy was nice but is a middle man, doesnt breed them so i am relying on him telling me that his breeder vaccinates them. Saw all around the place, spent ages looking at the chickens and around the place, inside and out, the guy does love his chickens!! All seem healthy etc I think its a case nerves, its quite scary standing in a load of chickens thinking i am getting a few of these!!! Ain't Nobody Here
Chickinboy's right, it's quite normal to worry but you don't need to panic . I got my girls from a small (reputable) breeder and they weren't vaccinated - they're still here and healthy 2 1/2 years later . I think only large flocks get vaccinated as it's quite expensive to do.

Chucky Mama
How exciting for you! Try not to worry about the whole disease angle. Pick chickens that look bright and healthy and if you can pick them up and check that they have clear eyes, no creepy crawlies and clean bottoms. None of mine were vaccinated. MedusA
Congratulations on nearly having some chickens. Please don't worry. A few nerves/excitement is perfectly natural. The breeder of my Araucanas only ever vaccinates against Markeks Disease. Her theory is that they are better building up antibodies through naturally acquired immunity. Not sure how true that is, but all her birds looked healthy and my Araucanas certainly are.
madchickenlady
None of my girls are vaccinated (pure breeds from hobbyist breeders rarely are) and I've had no problems
