Online Discount Club Pop Up Don't Be Sucked In

Recommended Posts

OH bought some trainers last month from Millet Sports and after completing checkout something popped up offering cash back on his next purchase together with a 'free trial' membership to the discount club. He must have clicked on it (quite possibly to get rid of it) as he didn't enter any further card details he didn't think any more of it. He has just spotted a debit on our statement for an amount going out to someone called 'High Street Max'.

This company advertises to consumers shopping on other retailer's websites and has agreements with Lastminute.com and Millet Sports. It previously had a similar agreement with Vistaprint to advertise schemes called 'VPrewards' and 'Premier Club'.

The schemes offer consumers who have finished making a purchase from one of these host websites the opportunity to receive a 'cash back' off their next purchase together with a 'free trial' membership to the discount club. If the consumer agrees to the offer, but does not cancel during the free trial period, they are charged a monthly membership fee of up to £14.95.

What is particularly annoying and worrying is that he entered card details into the MilletsSports website only, these detail were obviously passed on to the second party. Also intersting that his card has been cloned since they had access to his card details

I bought a jacket from M&M Direct recently and this came up there after I'd paid. It's really misleading, as I thought it was from M&M and carried on filling it in. It was only when I got to the small print and it asked for my card details that I realised it was some outside 'club' and nothing to do with M&M at all and I deleted all the information I'd put in so far.

I will check on our statements though and see if any odd payments have cropped up. :?

Yesterday I had a similar thing after ordering Pizza Hut online - that company offered £15 cash back on the next order, but the small print showed a monthly fee of £10 for such discounts!
