jill the potter Posted April 23, 2010 Share Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Hi, a bit worried about Korma. She normally lays every day but she hasn't for about 4 days now. She has gone very quiet, and is walking around slowly with her tail down and her feathers puffed up. She just about managed to eat a grape! Her comb is red and pert, eyes clear and bright. Her crop is soft and almost empty and I can't feel anything stuck down below. Have just wormed her and gave her some water off a spoon which she did drink a little of as I know they can dehydrate quickly. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm hoping that the worming has done the trick. My other girl, Tikka, is fine - has never looked better. jill the potter Posted April 23, 2010 Author Share Posted April 23, 2010 I used Xeno200 (I think it's called that - not got bottle in front of me) which I have used since we got them. She didn't seem swollen when I examined her. She's always been a skinny chicken so I'm sure it would be obvious. I have an appointment at the vets at 6.30 so hopefully they will be able to help? Will let you know how she goes on. It's typical, I was only bragging the other day how we've never had any problems with them.............................! Egluntyne Posted April 23, 2010 Share Posted April 23, 2010 Xeno 200 is probably best kept for use on external parasites tbh, it isn't a very effective wormer. jill the potter Posted April 24, 2010 Author Share Posted April 24, 2010 The vet examined Korma, temp normal, couldn't feel an egg stuck so thinks it might be stuck further up. She has given her antibiotics, anti inflammatory and something with calcium in. Managed to get all that inside her last night and she ate some watery porridge. She has done a couple of poos that look like egg white so I'm thinking that this must be the egg breaking up. This morning she seems a tiny bit brighter - tail not so low. Another eggy poo. More meds this morning, a syringe full of water and some more water porridge oh and a couple of grapes!!!! Will just have to see how she goes. Has anyone else's chooks had this happen? jill the potter Posted April 25, 2010 Author Share Posted April 25, 2010 Spent most of yesterday syringing water into Korma as she just wasn't bothered with food or water. Then last night she tucked into some left over rice!!!! Seems a lot brighter this morning. Moving around more and actually resisting me syringing meds (have to say it was a lot easier when she was a bit lethargic) which I'm taking as a good sign. She's eaten a bit of porridge this morning and is actually scratching around. Don't think we're out of the woods yet but feel at least to be helping, it was really awful to see her so weak and poorley. Still doing eggy poos though, does anyone know how long they will last? jill the potter Posted April 30, 2010 Author Share Posted April 30, 2010 Well, what a week!! Korma has been very up and down eating, then not eating, lethagic then perky..... She's been having all her medicine syringed into her beak twice a day and been virtually hand fed on porridge with calcium supplement. She does seem better, but I would say she's not 100% herself. She has starting pecking at a bit of corn and occasionally some layers pellets. I suppose my worry is that now the medication has finished she will go back downhill as not sure whether egg is still stuck or what (she hasn't laid yet) We will have to wait and see I have to say that I have been really shocked and quite angry at the way almost everyone I have spoken to about her - their immediate reaction is "you took a chicken to the vets??" and "you paid £50 for medicine for it?" "how much is a new chicken?" I have been really upset by this attitude from friends (and OH) who have pets of their own!!!! Apparently because a chicken is 'just a chicken' and doesn't deserve treatment. This was also from a close friend who howled with laughter because I was syringing water into Korma's beak to make sure she didn't dehydrate, and then I find out that she has to do that with her (really boring) lizzard 'cause it's too lazy to drink!!!!!!!!!! A pets a pet and we all know our ladies are lovely. I keep my work colleagues totally entertainedf with all of the antics i have to get up to with my chickens. I thought it was reasonable considering all the treatment they had and although one had to be pts the next day, Scarlett is now top chook and lays everyday. I really did think that she might relapse when she had finished her medicine, but, thankfully she seems back to her old self! Thought it would be nice to post a happy outcome as it seems when chickens get poorley they don't seem to have a good survival rate Hope I'm not speaking too soon!!!
