ajayb
I thought that once a bird began to lay then, whatever colour the egg, it remained consistent throughout her egg-laying life. I have two Cuckoo Marans who began laying dark brown, glossy eggs as expected, but I now notice that when all the hens are laying, I'm only getting one egg like this. Does that mean that one Maran has a problem (ie she's not putting down the dark brown pigment on the egg at the end of the process)? I know that the 'coating' can be rubbed off these eggs if they're freshly laid (and can see that if a piece of straw has become stuck to the egg and you pull it off) so does that mean that something's missing in this hen's diet or that she's unwell in some way? (I did find a couple of 'softies' last week and suspect that these might have belonged to this Maran and have added some limestone flour to their feed in addition to their normal crushed oyster shell.) Can anyone help, please?
