Electric Hen - Chick Visibility Warning

Recommended Posts

I cleaned out my chicks yesterday morning and they were all fine, when I went to check them last night before bed I lifted the electric hen which I wouldnt normally do and I found a very sick chick on its side

I removed the chick which seemed to have a respiritory problem and gave it an antibiotics. It then went in to a separate brooder but sadly died in the night

I just wanted to highlight the fact that as the chicks are not visible when they are under the electric hen that its always worth double checking under the hen a couple of times a day

Yes I will 2nd that - I dispatched a bantam chick yesterday that hadn't been right since it hatched-the most overdue one as it was I don't know if that was why - anyway, the thing wouldn't eat or drink and weakened fast, I also found it stuck on its back under the brooder. By no means am I saying it is a 'risk' of using an electric hen, it is just that you have to account for al your chicks several times a day (which I do) as I can just imagine if you had lots of identical chicks and didn't, you could very easily end up with a rather grim surprise under there...
