She has always had her insured and was thankful when she was younger as she had a problem with her teeth which resulted in her having lots of extractions. Recently her insurance company put up her premium big time so she thought that she would cancel it. However, she decided to have her checked over by a vet to just make sure that she was in good health before she cancelled. Vets bills mount up so quickly We have an aged golden retriever, 12 yrs old now, and have been paying paet insurance since he was 9 weeks old - never claimed, and I'm not even going to try and add up how much that's cost us! It's now over £50 a month which is more than mine and my husbands life insurance put together! victoriabunny Posted May 6, 2010 Share Posted May 6, 2010 My dog Charlie's recent eye trauma (caused by a freak accident, completely unpredictable) resulted in two lots of surgery and countless other vet trips...the total bill was over £3600. Space Chick Posted May 6, 2010 Share Posted May 6, 2010 I had to cancel Henrys insurance at Christmas, as the premiums tripled now he's 15. I have paid since he was a pup and have claimed once for £80 He's on a monthly medication which costs me £25 a month, the premiums would have been £65 a month. jess1merlin Posted May 6, 2010 Share Posted May 6, 2010 Your friend was very wise to get her dog checked by the vet. I had a dog with Cushings disease and the drugs she needed were really expensive (thankfully she was insured). She also had to have tests every 3 months to check that the drugs were working and that the dose was correct. Seagazer Posted May 8, 2010 Share Posted May 8, 2010 Cookie is fairly accident prone, she's had whiplash from sneezing, something stuck in her throat etc so am glad she's insured. My old dog Sally racked up over £2,000 in vets bills when we were trying to discover what was wrong with her. I'm not sure at the time that we would have had the money to cover it if it wasn't for the pet insurance. The vet wanted to start her on chemotherapy without really knowing what was wrong.
