George, my only exisiting Omlet girl, has been really quiet the past couple of days; standing still a lot, eyes closed, facing the wall, etc. She is drinking ok, but I don't see her eating much. She just looks like she's taking a kip half the time. She arrived POL Feb 2008. Do you think she could be on the way out? I've put the usual tonics in the drinking water, and I gave her a little bath, wrapped her up in a towel, and she watched TV with us for an hour on Saturday night.

Aw sorry to hear George isn't well. I've just lost my gingernut girl, similar age. I'm sure you've wormed her and checked for any injuries, lice etc.

The tonic and treats sounds a good thing.

Someone more experienced will be along soon.

Yes, I've wormed them all recently, and I thought if it were mites or lice they would all have them. I did check her over, she looked ok apart from the closed eyes/lethargy thing. Thanks for replying.

I'm not a chicken expert by far. Has she got a runny nose or struggling to breath at all. I only ask as my ladies tend to do this when they have an respiratory infection. Keep an eye on her as she may need anti biotics.

I got my girls in May 08 and for the last couple of months one of my girls has been like this. There is nothing I can find to say that she is ill so to speak. I think mine has just slowed down completely. Ginger is still eating but spends a long time just standing hunched up, when she does walk around she just walks very slowly. Mine is also a Gingernut. I've also done tonics, worming etc. Bless her she did lay an egg last week. In my heart I think she's on her way out. I sit in the run and have cuddles with her and she snuggles down and has 40 winks.

Our Lucy was like this for weeks, but had to be PTS as she had a tumor (stress of being an exbatt?) All you can do beside the vets is keep her warm and dry. Is she loosing weight? Does her abdomen feel hard (at the end of the keel, but before you get to the vent). Is she usually a good layer?

She sounds just like this. She's got no signs of a cold or infection; doesn't seem ill as such. She's pecking around and drinking, but just seems to be slowing down generally. I think she looking like a little old lady, bless her.

She was always at the top of the pecking order, but I saw one of the black rocks pecking her last night, which was quite upsetting.

Oh bless. I must admit thankfully the new girls are taking the heat for Ginger as she was the bottom of the pecking order before.

 

I suppose its just lots of tlc and see what happens.

she's not all that old to be honest, I've had ex batts (who were already about 18 months to 2 years old when they came to us) and they've gone on for quite a while after so a normal hybrid should be even more long living than that, unless there is an underlying issue.

 

I'd take her to the vet if I were you and then you will be sure!
