Preparing Eglu to be a nursery

Recommended Posts

Cleopatra my 5 year old Miss Pepperpot is broody and as her companion Roxy died some months ago I decided to let her have a family and have put 8 bantam eggs under her. The nesting box I have filled with shredded newspaper but I am concerned that when the chicks hatch they could fall through the wooden roosting bars once they come out of the nest. Also any other advice on baby proofing the run and ensuring a good natural birthing would be appreciated.

I'd take the roosting bars out and fill the base with wood shavings or Aubiose so the chicks are ok ... maybe even put the broody in the tray on the eggs so the chicks don't have to try + get in or out the next box.

You can use lawn edging around the bottom of the run to keep the chicks safe.

Omlet do sell a small bird set[/] too :)

I put a layer of bricks in the poo tray & a layer of slates covered with hemcore to make a raised level for Buffie & the Bufflings to nest on and used the nestbox as a "buffet" with a feeder & water pot on a tile.......Buffie was an Orp & rather overflowed the nestbox in the (blue eglu)

We put plastic corrugated lawn edging around the edge......this year we'll fix it on the inside rather than the outside though as one of the Bufflings got its little head stuck through the run wire into one of the corrugations

When are the BtBs (babies to be  ) due..mine are expected on or around 26th :dance::pray::dance:
