Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

Someone suggested giving pro biotic yoghurt as a pick me up but isn't yoghurt made with milk and chickens can't have milk ?

Also could they eat baked beans, I was thinking of something else Evie could have maybe ?

Mine love yoghurt - especially with some porridge oats soaked in it for a bit.

 

They certainly don't have it a lot, but they have not come to any harm.

Ours have yoghurt if we have had a few runny poos, or if they are looking a bit listless, or if I have any in date in the fridge and they are at the back door talking to me.

They have a couple of spoonfuls on a plate/bowl, they eat it for a while and then they wander off, flicking it everywhere, backdoor, patio, rosemary bush, rose bush, garden bench etc...

I gave Mabel some probiotic yogurt when she was recovering from being poorly with the same sympmtoms as your Evie.

She sprayed it everywhere but ate enough to settle her runny tummy and it seemed to help her digest her food better (she was passing undigested corn which Flo then ate- yuk )

It's not recommended that chickens are fed regularly on dairy, but the odd bit - e.g. left-over cornflakes with milk on - doesn't seem to do any harm, and probiotic yoghurt is used by a lot of people for chooks that have had upset tummies or been on antibiotics or similar.

 

I don't think baked beans as such would be a problem, but bear in mind that they have quite a bit of sugar and salt in - all things in moderation, a few probably won't do any harm.

Something else I tempted Mabel with was sprouted seeds, I sprout mung beans on my windowsill, evidently they are full of lots of minerals and vitamins!

The lactase in the yoghurt helps them digest the lactose, so no probs there. Best to give them a live probiotic sort, for the beneficial bacteria.

 

I never give mine any other sort of dairy foods though.

Thank you everybody for that, I might go and get some probiotic yoghurt for Evie and see if that makes her feel any better
