craiginwales
I opened the coop as usual this morning and the chooks all ran out except one. She is now stretched out and panting. her eyes are open wide but she is refusing water & food. She doesn't seem to be in pain, just very lethargic. I have tried giving her water with a syringe but she doesn't seem to want any. Any suggestions on what the problem could be and how I could help her? The Dogmother
Hmmm, are there any more symptoms? I'd pick her up and examine her to start with - is her abdomen full and turgid? My first thought is that she may have peritonitis, but without any more information, it could be other things too. Give her a good checking over and get back to us. craiginwales
Thank you for your response - just picked her up and she seems normal - clean bum, bright eyes & abdomen feels normal. As soon as he put her down she flops down as if she is dizzy. She scuffled back into egg box and is stretched out again.
The Dogmother
Hmm, I'd get her to the vet, if her legs appear paralysed or floppy, it could be Marek's. Impossible to say from this distance, but if she's not got peritonitis, then it's a possibility from what you tell us.
Torrin
Sorry, no advice here just crossing my fingers for you that she's ok
Egluntyne
Panting? Does she sound wheezy or rattly? I think I'd take her to the vet to be on the safe side.
craiginwales
Just an update... Took chook to Vet - the vet noticed a hard lump just under the chooks left eye (I can't believe I missed it)... Anyway, the Vet cut the lump and puss oozed out, a quick dose of antibiotics and we were on our way home. A,azingly, the chook is now running around garden and scratching for bugs - a full recovery! The Dogmother
Great to her it. Crikey that was an outsider then, not the symptoms you'd expect at all, but she must have been in pain.
