Pets and the Heat

Recommended Posts

Well the temps in my front garden at the moment are just over 34oc

It's even too hot for the tortoises(My Leopard feels really warm even though she's spent all day in the shade)I've had to refill their water dishes countless times.

We have had to have the fan on our border terrier today too as she sufferers really bad with the heat.

I read about 10 minutes ago about someones Guinea Pig dying from the heat and another 2 suffering from heatstroke :(

You are so right to mention the heat an our pets at the moment. Just taking a dog for a big walk in this weather can put them at risk. I always walk during the cooler times of the day and in shade (woodland) or by the water if possible. I always take water and a collapsible bowl with me too. Some dogs are not sensible enough to slow down when it it hot and a very energetic dog charging around on a hot day can become dangerously ill.

Ruby is completely bonkers in this heat - she will not slow down! Having to walk her in areas where we know she does not career about as much, then keep taking short breaks to allow her to cool down. A thick coat isn't helping - she is booked in for a clip in 2 weeks. The earliest we could get it done!! :?

The park was heaving this morning at 8.30 as people were trying to get the dog walks in early. Cookie and her friend Harvey had to have a rest under a shady tree as they got so hot. They both have very thick curly coats.

I don't take her out during the day as it is just way too hot. :(

Poppy isnt good in the heat either and just doesnt know what to do with herself at the minute!

It must be said I find myself getting quite angry at those people who I see walking their dog at lunchtimes in this heat  Their poor pet is struggling beside them at a snails pace with its tongue nearly touching the floor

If i had my way I would make their owners wear 2 coats and send them round the block a few times just so they know how it feels!

I know Poppy hates it but we mist her with the plant spray to help cool her down, pop ice cubes in her water and place a damp sheet over her bed and it acts like a tent to provide a shady & cool spot.
