I have read on the forum that a chicken laying thin shelled eggs may benefit from cod-liver oil....so I would like to give this to one of my girls. So how do I do that? I guess by mixing it in with their pellets......but how much should I be giving them? Any tips gratefully received! thanks.

I'm not sure of an exact answer for the amounts - but I just plop a bit into the food - enought to give a slight covering to the pellets. If I use too much and it gets sticky my ladies turn their noses up. I tend to use it to make other supplements stick to the food - in particular limestone flour that I occasionally use if I get soft shelled eggs. Works really well for mine, so worth a go if you're having trouble with thin shells. Apparently you can get it in horsey-type shops, though I got a small amount from ebay for a couple of quid, as I only have a small flock and you only need a spoonful to coat.

 

Beware though - mine came in the post in a clear plastic bag, in an envelope that had split - it looked like I was having another kind of very illegal white powder delivered!!!! My post lady now gives me funny looks.

 

I should mention - if your girls have only been laying a little while, you will get a few softies anyway, and it's nothing to worry about. It's just their bodies getting used to the process. If it persists, or they've been laying a fair while, then give the limestone flour a go. Oh, as well as making sure they always have access to grit.

A dollop is the precise scientific amount that I administer. Just enough to coat the pellets.
