Not Again

Well lets start on wednesday night ... my polish hen was out side in the rain and my dad said she was drenched and yesterday mourning she was still soaked ... (My dad should of dried her really , but he didn't tell me) So then yesterday afternoon my dad let them free range and everything was fine ... Then last night all the chickens where in except for polish hen , she was asleep on the floor outside so my dad picked her up and put her in the house and she jumped up onto the roosting poll ...

Then this mourning when my dad went to let them out , She was dead

 

So straight away i thought marek's disease because that what my silkie hen could of died of last week ... But she was very wet , so could of that killed her ?

 

And if i have got markes disease in my flock what do i do ? Some have had a vaccination ... But

Sorry to hear about your hen. Sounds as if she got chill and died as the nights are still quite cold sometimes. I think it might be best to tell your dad not to let them out in the rain especially silkies and polands as they aren't as hardy due to the feathering.

I just wanted to send my greatest sympathy to you Joza

I hope you are able to find out what caused her to become so ill so that you're able to get some closure and to put your mind at rest about the rest of your flock.

I'm new to chicken keeping so unfortunately I can't offer you any ideas as to what might have happened, but if you do find out could you please let us know. My husband and I always debate over whether to leave our girls out when it starts to rain; with me always rushing out to shoo them inside at the first drop, and him arguing that I should let them decide for themselves (they're ex-bats so I worry that they won't know to find shelter).

So if it was caused by her not recovering from getting wet and chilled, I think it could be a great lesson to other chicken keepers, both new and experienced, therefore maybe her death could prevent others.

 

I'm a stong believer in heaven, and even if you're not yourself I hope you can find comfort in my belief that she'll be with your other silkie hen now , watching over you and the rest of your girls and keeping them safe
