Minnie&Moose
We're into our 3rd set of intros now and Saturday was the first time I let the new girls, Mona and Maisie, free range with the mob! Needless to say there were a few scuffles but I was so impressed by Moose, our top hen. As with previous intros she swiftly gave each of the newbies a slight peck to their heads, to let them know who's boss, and then left them alone (though ate their food and layed in their nest box ). However, when Mabel (no. 3 in the pecking order) and Maisie (newbie) squared up and began a full on fight, beaks and feet flying, Moose thundered across the garden at top speed (she's pretty solid), separated the two birds and then promptly jumped on them both, putting them in their place. No more squabbles that day On Sunday we had a repeat performance - Mabel and Maisie had barely started to square up before Moose was back! This time she didn't even need to squash them - both birds squatted and sat there whilst she gave them a gentle 'telling off'. Hopefully the intros will continue to progress as smoothly over the next few weeks cos I'm looking forward to only having one house to clean out again! Guest
My betty is exactly like that. A tank of the bantam world ( well not an orp bant but still big ). If the MD's start to fight she is over there with a swift peck or she will chase them.
Minnie&Moose
You should hire her out . Maybe I could get her to make a 'training' video for other would-be top hens
