My macbook has died

This has all happened within 3 days:

1. CD/DVD stopped working (it works for some CDs but not all)

2. It would no go onto the internet, no matter what, it said it was connected but no webpage would display (other computers worked fine)

3. I wipe the entire hard drive and put a fresh install on (had to use a CD - good thing the drive was working)

4. I plug in my backup hard drive and start to copy all my backed up files over, it worked and told me to restart my computer. After restarting I was greeted with this message:

This message comes up every time I start up my computer, and I have to restart each time, as I can't get past it.

 

After doing some more research, I find out the core system files are corrupted, I need to re-install them from a CD, but now the CD drive wont work at all, so I cant.

Yikes! Are you able to plug in an external CD/DVD drive? Hope you can sort something out.

Fred, my little ibook started doing this after a friend recommended I add additional RAM.

 

It is called a kernel panic message - google it and it tells you what to do. Something like turn off computer and hold down ctrl, apple, P & R and then press the power button to turn it on. Keep all 4 buttons pressed down until you hear the start up tone for the SECOND time. Not easy, you might need extra fingers, but it worked for me. Good luck.

The CD drive has decided to work again (touch wood) so hopefully I will be able to restore my system.

That doesn't sound good. I've emailed your prob to hubby as he works on Macs and does a lot of fiddling around with them, I'll let you know if he suggests anything.

Kernel Panics (Or 'the curtain of doom'!!!) are normally related to bad RAM or USB devices.

 

First of all, try removing all USB devices and restarting.

 

If no luck, try removing a RAM module. Have you installed any recently?

 

If the problem goes away you know the module you removed is faulty. If not, try removing the other module (assuming you have more than one) and try again.

I haven't installed any RAM or new hardware, it only happened after I restored the computer from the backup...

But if this new install doesn't work, I will remove some RAM and see if that is the cause.

installing new RAM is usually the most likely cause but that doesn't mean your existing RAM hasn't just 'gone bad'. This may mean you'll have to buy some more like Christian's friend had mentioned above. Try http://www.crucial.com

I think the RAM is fine, I can access windows on a partition, it works.

The restoration I was doing (for a second time) froze (as I was booting from CD, the CD drive stopped working), I had to restart, now there is no Macintosh HD section at all.

I think I will buy/borrow a external CD/DVD drive, see if that works.

 

I have made a plan:

Buy external CD/DVD drive, hook it up via firewire.

Put in Mac OSX install CD

Boot from external CD/DVD drive

Use disk utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition and repartition drive

Install a fresh copy of OSX

Install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard

Copy files from backup over manually

Here's what Hubby says to do, apologies if you've tried any of it already, I don't understand any of it.

 

I would do a clean install (may need to get an external DVD reader (10.4 onwards are DVDs) if having problems with the in built one) NOT from a Time Machine/Carbon Copy back up etc...

If can get past the screen:

 

First option would be to run repair disc permissions / repair disc in disc utility. Run TechTool Deluxe if have it.

 

Check apple discussions and MacUser forum

I also have a MacBook which is misbehaving so I have followed this topic with great interest. It has served to convince me that in a matter or about five years I have become a complete computer numpty. I can't even begin to recognise the terminology or language used! How quickly things move on when you don't keep your finger on the pulse. I think I'll make an appointment with the Mac shop instead of deluding myself!

After much cursing, I managed to get Leopard installed. But since I fogot to wipe the drive after the time machine restoration failed, some applications don't work. But, I am going to the Apple Store on Saturday, see how much a new superdrive costs.
