kazza45
Hi I am very new to looking after chickens but must admit have totally fallen in love with them. About 8 weeks ago we had 5 hens but unfortunately a couple of weeks ago they fell foul to Mr Fox . We managed to put that behind us have gone mad with extra fox proofing and took the plunge with 4 new hens on Saturday. My concern is with 1 of these hens. She is not coughing or sneezing or anything like that but seems to be very lethargic. Have seen her drinking water but haven't seen her eat. She likes to stand very still and tuck her head under her wing. Is this normal? Please help I need some advice. Thank you
tokenwelshman
I'm very new to this. However, one of my new chooks seemed to doze off far too often during the day. She was eating and drinking well but just seemed to be lacking any energy. She also had a limp which got worse day by day. Turns out she had a badly swollen leg, which a course of antibiotics has dealt with very nicely (she's digging up the driveway as we speak). So, possibly yours is fighting an infection like mine was, which is leaving her lethargic?
kazza45
Quite possibly. Will keep a close eye on her I guess. Thanks
Tutti Frutti
Oooh... when I saw "stand still, head tucked under wing" and not eating... I think she's a poorly chook and needs to see a vet. Chooks should be very active, bright eyed, and bushy tailed... with a very upright tail. If it's hanging down, that;s not a good sign either. It could be she's stressed and got a cold (or mycoplasma - all the symptoms of a cold but can take hold very aggressively and drag a chook down). It could be some other infection - a course of antibiotics could make her feel loads better. Is her poo normal (is there any, if she's not eating )? If you pick her up, is her breast bone sticking out (sign of a skinny, underweight chook). Has she been wormed with Flubenvet recently (Verm-X is more of a preventative than a cure and Flubenvet was recommended by my vet when my chook was ill). I hope this helps. Fingers crossed eh? Please let us know how she's doing

Please let us know how she's doing Hi Thanks for your help and advice. Looked at her much closer last night and she has got a runny nose and eye. Segregated her from the others and have given her lots of tlc. This evening she is much brighter is strutting around quite happily pecking away. Eye is still watery so will keep a close eye on her. Plum
It's a sign of mycoplasma may be worth getting her checked by vet as its bacterial and responds to treatment.
Millie-Annie
Mycoplasma is so easy to treat. A week of 20mls of Denaguard in the water and sorted
