emerald
I Know, I know I said I wouldn't but I did We collected them yesturday We now have 5 very cute and much loved chicks. The chicks are sexed and all girls. http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad228/emerald4/P1000679.jpg http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad228/emerald4/P1000683.jpg http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad228/emerald4/P1000675.jpg http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad228/emerald4/P1000673.jpg Is there anything I should be aware of in the early days other than the temp of the brooder. They are all eating and drinking loads. We borrowed a heat lamp from a friend, although they don't seem to go under it as they like to use the whole brooder but the breeder said that is what i should aim for as it means they are happy with the temp and if they all went under the lamp then they were too cold. Hope this is right. They are infront of a very sunny window in our living room a floor to ceiling window and they appear to be enjoying there new brooder. We haven't really been able to name the lighter chicks, as they are so alike. So far the names are florrie for the light chick which has two dark strips along it's back and Coco for the brown legbar. How much can they be safley handled? so far I've just let the chicks sit on the childrens laps whilst they were sat in front of the window in the sun and the chicks seemed to love this and happily explored there jean belts and my daughters flowery dress. I haven't let them handle them as I realise their legs are so fragile plus I don't like the idea of them being cold but with the sun shining through and the heat lamp they seem very content to wonder around though. My children have already started making a photo record of their daily growth. Youngest has read them stories and eldest hasn't stop watching them. Bless them

atsw
How much can they be safley handled? Congratulations on the new brood! When we had our new chicks last year they were raised by a broody hen, but even so, after just seven days my kids were picking the chicks up on a daily basis. The more human contact they get, the tamer they will be as adult chickens. Our Frizzle got the most attention (because he was different to the others) and is now the softest cockerel you can imagine. So, once the chicks have gained a bit of strength, encourage your children to handle the chicks as often as they like. Andrew
Egluntyne
Is there anything I should be aware of in the early days other than the temp of the brooder. If you haven't already done this - pop some marbles or pebbles in the drinker. or around its edge,so that they can't drown.

I'm really surprised at how much they drink already. Andrew thanks for the tip. I believe the cream legbar can be a bit flighty so I have been picking her up each day. I thought maybe then she would be tamer and just as friendly as the goldlines and not so flighty.
