Hi there

Picking up 10 chooks on Sunday for our allotments. :D

What is it best to feed them, our chooks at home eat pellets etc.? :?:

We will put them in the roosting pen when we get them and let them out on Monday. Will they find their way to bed?

thanks

As they are battery girls they may have been fed on mash but an immediate change to layers pellets shouldnt be a problem - ive done this each time I have rescued. Just check the condition of their beaks and make sure they are not deformed in anyway.

It would be best to keep an eye on them for the first few days or a week to make sure they all make it back to bed and know where 'home' is.

Good luck with your girls :D

Ask the rescue people. We were told to start our 4 on mash then if we wanted to change to layers pellets to do so gradually. If the food they have is familiar it's one less transition for them to make. I bought a 4.5kg bag of mash which lasted about 3 weeks with 4 hens. From the second week onwards I mixed the mash with pellets. At first they threw them out, then I noticed they were eating them. I swear by the Allan and Paige ex-bat mash and pellets - and use it for all my chickens, not only the ex-bats

Hope that helps

Are they coming from BHWT?

If so they will more than likely have the A&P Ex Batt feed available for you to buy on the day which is available in 5kg and 20kg bags and in crumb and pellet form. BHWT recommend that they are fed on this but you can feed on standard layers too. Or you could start with this and move to standard later when they have their strength.

They are likely to have been fed on mash so crumb/mash would be advisable to start and then gradually mix pellets in.

Also with ten lucky ladies arriving it would be wise to put in a few extra feed stations so that they all get access to food and water incase of any bullies/dominance issues.
