What is up with Doris? Looks like impacted crop but is soft!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I would like some advice please. Our friends/chicken buddies are away on holiday so we checking up on their chooks. Even before they went off for holiday I pointed out to them that one of their Welsummers (Doris) had very big/distended crop. They suspect she was not laying for couple of weeks. They are new to the chicken keeping art and we not much more experienced.

Those of you who know the character of the Welsummers will know how difficult it is to catch them. Hence the owner were unable to feel the crop or do any other examination what so ever. I took the challenge yesterday and cought the little rascal. Her crop is actually very soft as if holding fluid or soft jelly. Not at all as impacted crop is descired in literature. She did not appeared in any pain or discomford when was touching and feeling the crop. Infact it appeared to sooth her as she was not over the moon to be handled. She appears to eat and scrat around quite happily but is still not laying (she was welllaying previously and is still just a pullet).

Any ideas what is up with Doris and what can be done about is?

Any advice will be apprieciated,

Kind Regards,

My Louie had a sour crop. She is over 2 years old and has now stopped laying. She had lost some weight, and althought going down to peck at things, she wasn't actually eating anything. It looked like she was hungry, but couldn't face swallowing anything. Her crop felt large and squishy, and after a few days, she really wasn't getting any better. I gently tipped her upside down and a whole load of yucky smelly liquid came out. I allowed her time to breath again, so I didn't hold her upside down for long.

Louie looked a bit surprised and had to have a bit of a sit down afterwards. However about 30 minutes later she had really picked up and ate some weetabix in probiotic yoghurt - she was starving!

If you do do this - do watch her for a few days afterwards. My Louie then went on to develop impacted crop and she then had to have a visit to the vets for and injection and antibiotics. However, she is back to her normal self now. :D

Hope this helps and hope all is well with your friends chook.
