What breed?

Recommended Posts

Hoping to get a bit of advice as a total newbie here.

We have now go the house for our chickens but not actually got the birds yet. We are hoping to get 2 to start with but wew were wondering, do we need to get 2 of the same type (think we want to go down the hybrid route rather than pure breed) or can we mix and match?

Thanks

Lisa

From personal experience i would start with 4.

I had a very bad experience when I started with 3.

I would also for the first time either go with Hybrids or Bantams.

I went for Light Sussex Bantams. They are amazing little birds and are good layers. They do go broody but you can snap them out of that.

I would recommend looking at bantams since their small and easy to look after.

I have two different hybrids: a Sussex Star and a Goldline. They are both very good egg layers and get on fine together. They're pretty good natured birds so I'm very happy with them, and having two different types means I can tell them apart, which is useful. They also lay different colour eggs so I can identify who has laid what.
